Projection Design Wolverhampton
Feel Apart of Wolverhampton. Light up the town – Out of Darkness Cometh Light. Getting my message out – how to entertain, bemuse and make a difference. “In one way or another, all [digital artworks and environments] are concerned with possible relationships between the physical space and the virtual, and what distinguishes them are the balance between these two realms and the methods employed to translate one space into the other.” (Paul 2003) We’re all pretty aware of our surroundings. The place we live, the places we travel through regularly and the places that we have been. But what is going on in these places? What’s happening in the buildings that we walk past? What do those buildings mean to us? Our environment used to be a static thing, but with the advent of new and cheaper technologies, designers are starting to wake up to the idea that an environment needn’t be static. It can change and react to us. It can reflect our moods or even influence them. My task was to design a projection piece that predominantly uses words and considered typography to change the city for a moment. So I decided to make my projection static and animated. The idea was to make you Feel Apart of Wolverhampton. This project I wanted to convey warm welcoming to the general public from the Lady Wulfruna herself and the City of Wolverhampton to give information on the background of Wolverhampton and Lady Wulfruna but also to show how proud we are as a city. FACT: THE CITY IS NAMED AFTER LADY WULFRUNA, WHO FOUNDED THE TOWN IN 985AD AND WAS THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF ETHELRED I. THE NAME ‘WOLVERHAMPTON’ DERIVES FROM ‘WULFRUNA’S TOWN ON THE HILL (HEANETON MEANING TOWN ON THE HILL). The message in the piece is something that already exists today told by the lady herself that states: I WULFRUN, DO GRANT TO THE PROPER PATRON AND HIGH THRONED KING OF KINGS AND IN HONOUR OF, THE EVERLASTING VIRGIN MOTHER OF GOD, MARY, AND OF ALL THE SAINTS, FOR THE BODY OF MY HUSBAND AND OF MY SOUL, TEN HIDES OF LAND, TO THAT AFORESAID MONASTERY OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD THERE. I have studied this message and to make the general public welcome, I have transcribed the message into the Top 5 languages spoken in Wolverhampton today using animation. Enjoy history!
